Basic Firearms Maintenance

The Basic Firearms Maintenance program will provide training in the required techniques to disassemble and re-assemble the pistol or rifle of students choice. Method of instruction will include:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Hands on performance

Prerequisite:

This is a class for beginners to learn how to properly clean and maintain firearms. He/she must have all necessary equipment, to included:

  • Firearm of choice (If not available, one can be provided)
  • Cleaning Tools (may be obtained at the range)
  • Solvents (may be obtained at the range)
  • 25 rounds of appropriate caliber ammunition for test fire (if desired)

Subjects covered:

  • Basic firearms safety
  • Proper levels of maintenance required for the firearm
  • Applicable solvents and lubricants
  • Rust prevention or removal
  • Specific disassembly instructions for the weapon
  • How to check for unusual wear and tear
  • Specific re-assembly
  • How to safely accomplish function checks on the weapon
  • Application of trouble shooting problems with weapon

Defensive Handgun

A three hour classroom and range program designed as instruction to civilian defensive handgun shooting. The course emphasis is placed on safe gun handling fundamentals and includes pistol nomenclature and function, firearm safety, marksmanship, loading/unloading, malfunction clearing, speed reloads, reloading under duress and holster drawing. Once complete, students should feel comfortable progressing on to The Academies’ Advanced Defensive Handgun program.

  • Holster Types and Positions
  • Grip
  • Removal from Holster

  • Practical Application on Range; 200 rounds

Required Equipment:

Reliable, functional handgun; Belt holster (rigid) with sturdy belt; 200 rounds of jacketed ammunition; 2 magazines or speed loaders; Hearing and eye protection.

No pre-requisite necessary for this course.

Intermediate Handgun - Individual

This Intermediate Handguns firearms training class will take students beyond basic handgun skills.

Subjects Covered:

  • Intermediate handgun techniques
  • Clearing jams
  • Reloading quickly
  • Actual Range Shooting
  • Controlled pairs
  • In-depth ammunition knowledge

This class is designed for the people who know the basics of handgun operation and want to take the next step. This is a one on one class with a private instructor. The first hour of class is spent in the classroom discussing handgun and ammunition knowledge and new techniques. The second hour is spent on the range, doing actual shooting, learning and practicing the new techniques. After the class, the shooter will be able to handle and manipulate a handgun at a more advanced level.

Techniques Practiced:

Trigger reset, chamber indicator, press checking, speed reload, tactical reload, jam clearing (4 types), double taps, accuracy vs. speed, one hand shooting

Required Equipment:

50 rounds of ammunition. Price does not include ammunition but can be selected based on preference of student during course. Note: Can be purchased at the range for range shooting portion of the course. Two mags or speed loader for revolvers.

Intro to handguns or Women’s Basic Pistol or similar skill level

Intermediate Handgun - Small Group

This Intermediate Handguns firearms training class will take students beyond basic handgun skills.

  • Actual Range Shooting
  • Controlled pairs
  • In-depth ammunition knowledge

This class is designed for the people who know the basics of handgun operation and want to take the next step. This class is taught in small groups and is not a one on one class with a private instructor (If you would like private instruction, check out “Intermediate Handgun – Individual” which is a one on one with a private instructor). The first half of class is spent in the classroom discussing handgun and ammunition knowledge and new techniques. The second half is spent on the range, doing actual shooting, learning and practicing the new techniques. After the class, the shooter will be able to handle and manipulate a handgun at a more advanced level.

Remedial Handgun for Security Officers

This Remedial Handgun training class for Security Officers will refresh the basic knowledge and fundamental skills for carrying and using a handgun on duty. An excellent course for the officer that’s preparing for state requalification that need to freshen up their skills. This course does NOT count towards Continuing Education credits.

Subjects Covered:
•Fundamentals of marksmanship reinforced
•Drawing from holster
•Actual Range Shooting
•Preparing for requalification

Prerequisite: A current or previous Level III commission with The Private Security Bureau

The Castle Defense Course

THIS CLASS WILL TEACH STUDENTS THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ATTITUDE NECESSARY FOR DEFENDING THEIR FAMILY AND THEIR HOME WITH A HANDGUN. STUDENTS WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION AND LEVELS OF EFFECTIVENESS, HOW TO SAFELY STORE FIREARMS, HOW TO DEAL WITH FIREARM MALFUNCTIONS, PROPER USE OF COVER AND CONCEALMENT, RELOADING UNDER DURESS, CLOSE RANGE SHOOTING TACTICS, LOW LIGHT SHOOTING, AND THE LAWS THAT APPLY TO CITIZENS WHEN DEFENDING THEIR HOME.
  • This course is best for those who already have handgun experience, or have taken the Introduction to Handguns or a similar course.
